This has been a topic that I see all the time. People have questions about this process and the answers aren't the easy to find, so I am here to answer what I can. Please feel free to message me if you have any questions that aren't answered by this post.
It's Super Easy
I know that it can be a very scary feeling to look at those publishing questions and just have no idea where to start. I've been there and I can't tell you how hard it was for me to finally push the publish button. The process itself is honestly very easy. The first page is the stuff that you should know like the back of your hand: title, series, author, etc.
Copywrite
By just writing something you instantly have copywrite. The characters are yours, the words are yours. You do have publishing writes and can check this box without hesitations, but if you would like added protection against someone trying to use your work as there own you can go and get your book registered at copyright.gov. This does cost money, and it depends on your start how much. Mine was $55. This is something you can choose to do after the book is published if that is what you would like to do.
Keywords
We've all used these, but it's so much easier to use them than to choose them. So advice is to think about what you like to search for when it comes to books. Vampire books for instance. If your books have vampires or other creatures that is a great keyword to use. Another I like to us is female lead. When I was growing up there was much fewer books about female leads, and I still find them interesting.
Categories
This is a big one, and it needs to be accurate! You must find the best categories to place your book and your only allowed two. Think about it long and hard before making your decision.
Digital Rights Management (DRM)
This is a personal preference that you will need to make a decision on. If you put yes, then your book will be protected so that readers can't make it into a PDF and distribute it freely. I agree that you want to be paid for your work, but if you are in this for exposure and the love of the work and not money, I would recommend letting people share it for free. It they like it they can come back and buy the sequel.
The next part is all about uploading your book and cover. And ISBN number if you are wanting your book in print. Amazon will give you a number for free.
Pricing
The last page is all about pricing which you get to choose for yourself. You also get to choose if you want 30% royalties or 70% royalties. Looking at it like that why would anyone choose 30% but the 70% has a lot of guidelines that you have to follow. There is a price limit you are allowed to set your book at if you choose the 70% (between $2.99 and $9.99). There is a delivery fee as well, but honestly, as long as your book isn't very long you won't be paying more than 15 cent per book bought. The last thing you agree to is that you have to let your buyers lend the book to others for 14 days at a time. I, personally, think this is a choice well made. You want as many people to read your book as possible.
And then you hit submit. There's a lot to it, but it really isn't as hard as it sounds. I hope I answered all of your questions, but if there is anything I can do to help I am always a message away.
